We met Friday morning at 8 am and set off for Georgia. We paused at Santee for a snack and to stretch our legs and then continued on with our journey. Some of the girls spent the time riding looking for interesting things and writing in their "Journey Journal" about what they'd seen.
We arrived in Savannah GA at around 1pm and ate a picnic lunch in Ellis Park while watching people playing in the fountain. Oh how the girls longed to play in the fountains too, but sadly many had on their new school sneakers and were firmly told NO! Though they were allowed to play on the grassy area adjacent to the fountains.
We then made our trek through downtown Savannah towards The Birthplace and arrived in good time. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief as we were ushered into the air conditioned house. Our tour guide started us in the dining room where we were shown plates that Daisy painted herself and learned that children in her time dined at a different time and at a different table than adults. As we made our way through the rest of the house all of the girls peppered the tour guide with questions and were informed that they could tell their family and friends, "I visited my mansion down in Savannah," because it belongs to all the Girl Scouts. We saw the Medal of Freedom that was awarded to Juliette Gordon Low earlier in the year had just arrived from Washington DC the previous month.
We then had our pinning ceremony in the courtyard. The leader pins one girl and then each girl pins another of her Girl Scout sisters. We ended the ceremony by singing TAPS. I'm not sure of the history of the song but we sang it when I was in Girl Scouts in the 80s.
Only girls who have visited The Birthplace are eligible to wear the pin and this year there was a special edition 100th anniversary pin available. While we were in the courtyard we took a few pictures in front of the commemorative GS Gate that celebrates the life of Juliette Gordon Low and the Wellesbourne House Gate, which she designed herself. The girls then got the chance to visit the gift shop and make pressed pennies with their change. We made our way back through Savannah and then traveled to our hotel where we cooled off and had some much needed rest and relaxation. We ordered delivery and had some fun at the hotel and then headed upstairs to wash up. Then the girls enjoyed some snacks and TV as they wound down from an exciting day!
We woke up bright and early Saturday morning, had breakfast in the lobby, packed up and made our way to Tybee Island where we had an interesting and exciting time on Captain Mike's Dolphin Tour!
On our way out of Savannah we stopped at Sonic for a bit of lunch and Mrs. Donna got all of the girls some ice cream. Sad to leave but happy to have the memories we made, we then started our trip home!
We'd like to thank Pro Ambulance for funding this trip, our chaperones Mclean Bracy and Katina Dudley for helping us keep our girls safe, and all of the moms for the contributions each made and for allowing their daughters to go on this journey to the "Girl Scout Mecca" in historic downtown Savannah with us!
