10/7/12 Hiker Badge

Sunday October 7th 2PM -4PM
At the state Park

Working On:
Brownies will be finishing their "Hiker" badge and Daisies will be working on their petals. Also girls who participated this summer will be finishing up their WOW! Journey.

What to bring:
Wear sturdy shoes, sneakers or boots, as we'll be tromping through the woods. Bring a trail snack and water for the hike, and bring your binder with the "trail signs" handout I gave out at the last meeting. Girls who worked on the WoW! Journey this summer should bring their "Water Promises" handout so we can finish up the Journey.

Below is the handout I gave the girls on hiking clothes and food:

What do I wear and take with me when I go hiking?
First ask these questions:
What will the weather be like on the day we go hiking?
How long will I be gone hiking?
Where will we be hiking?
Shoes:  Always wear good sturdy shoes to protect your feet from things that could hurt them, like sticks, or sharp rocks, or insects and animals that bite! If you love hiking and it becomes one of your hobbies you might want to buy some special hiking boots.
Clothes: Wear clothes that are weather appropriate. Layers are helpful so that you can take off clothes as you become hotter.
Backpack: Do I need a backpack? If you are going on a hike that lasts more than a few minutes you will need a backpack to carry your supplies in and take your trash out.
Water: Always take water with you, even on short hikes. It’s no fun to be thirsty in the woods.
Food: See below
Other supplies: As you get older and we take longer hikes you may need to take some supplies with you, right now your leaders will have everything you need. Some supplies you may want if you take a hike with your family include: First aid kit, compass, bandana(s), binoculars for bird watching, emergency rain gear & water tight bag.
Food to take on a hike:
Hiking is hard work and it burns a lot of calories so you always want to take a snack with you for short hikes or an entire meal for longer hikes. Here are some options:
GORP: Good Old Raisins and Peanuts – Make a trail mix with some high energy food like raisins and peanuts or add anything else to it. There are tons of trail mix recipes to try!
Walking Salad: A “walking salad” is one that is easy to eat while you walk. Mix any of your favorite fresh fruits and vegetables in a container or plastic baggie to eat while you hike.
Nose-bag lunch: Named after the meals that horses carry around with them hanging in a bag around their noses. Bag any light-weight delicious lunch items you like best and bring it along.
